Pop-radio-ready garage-rock has a(nother) New York face, and this one is much prettier than Julian Casablancas. It belongs to much-hyped Lissy Trullie, the erstwhile model who found some shaggy Strokes-via-Television riffs lying in the gutter, snatched 'em up, and ran with them on her completely derivative yet totally winning debut EP, Self-Taught Learner. As Samuel L. Jackson put it in Pulp Fiction, “Personality goes a long way,” and she has tons of it to go along with her Chrissie Hynde–ish voice. At a recent gig in Philadelphia, the tiny Trullie seemed larger than life, charming the room with just the right combination of joy, humor, and downtown cool — enough to quell any thoughts of “Is this it?”
