Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

Better than: Digging up your time capsule.
While it was mid-'90s alt-rock nostalgia time down the street at the Nob Hill Masonic Center last night, it was Choose Your Own Nostalgic Adventure night at the Regency Ballroom. Three very odd and very idiosyncratic bands played music from every modern pop music era except perhaps the one we live in now: Teen Inc. played its polished and catchy brand of synthy, '80s John Tesh-ish funk; Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti dug a bit deeper and nodded abstractly to the psych-pop of the '60s and '70s (and the psychiatric wards of any time-space continuum); and the legendary tropicalia pioneers of Os Mutantes showed that they've lived through just about all of those eras and more, making this a Brazilian pop band that's been ahead of its time until just about now.
