In Sebastopol rapper J.Lately‘s new single, “Closer” — premiered here on SF Weekly and available for free download on SoundCloud — the up-and-coming wordsmith waxes poetic, in his laid back flow, about the long road to success and the struggles that come along with it. The cavernous, reverb- and guitar-heavy track was produced by Bay Area MC/producer Fabes, and is Lately’s first release since he dropped his 10-track album, Let’s Just Be Friends, last October.
Lately and Fabes made the beat for “Closer” while on a 12-hour drive between Salt Lake City and Seattle during the rapper’s Let’s Just Be Friends Tour last February. Five days later, while in a hotel room in Portland, Lately wrote the lyrics to it, taking inspiration from “the ups and downs of being an independent artist.”
Lately, who lived in Oakland and San Francisco until the age of 5, began rapping in middle school and released his debut mixtape, Straight Outta Somewhere, in 2009. In the seven years since, he has dropped 11 more albums and mixtapes, and in July, he’ll embark on his 12-city Good Panda Tour with DJ Werd.
Catch J.Lately at Hotel Utah on Saturday, July 23. More info here.
