James Ford and Jas Shaw come from a live band background, though you wouldn't know it from Unpatterns, the U.K. production duo's third full-length dance record as Simian Mobile Disco. There are no upfront vocal bangers or indulgent in-the-red moments; honestly, there aren't even that many overtly flushed ones. Far from overdriven bass drops and fiendish intensity, Unpatterns showcases elegant builds and tonal balance. This precision results in gradually emerging details, rather than flares of oversaturated swagger. Live, the pair is still capable of pulling up cheeky acid, rude low end, and sneering leads, though they now seem prone to layering paced streams rather than heaping it all on.
