For reasons I still can't figure out, I woke up this morning with the lead single from Vallejo rapper Nef the Pharaoh's latest EP stuck in my head. “Big Chang Chang,” as the song is called, is easily one of Nef's best songs, second only to his breakout hit, “Big Tymin',” that dropped at the end of 2015.
Nef (or “Neffy,” as he calls himself) is only 20-years-old and is the latest protege to sign to E-40's Sick Wid It Records. Though he's hard at work on his debut album, My Great Impression, the MC found time to release an EP, Neffy Got Wings, at the beginning of this year.
[jump] Though not every song on the 5-track album is a banger, it's an admirable effort, nonetheless. “Big Chang Chang” stands out as the hit song, with its bouncy beats, catchy hook, and nouveau hyphy swag, not to mention Nef's arched, springy voice which carries the whole song.
It's hard to say exactly what a “big chang chang” is, but, thanks to Urban Dictionary, I have two suppositions: It either refers to cocaine or it's a hybrid word combining “chill” and “hang.” (I'm gonna bet it's the latter.)
