Sharon Jones is the queen of funk, the godmother of soul, the preacherwoman of sweat-steeped gospel. Hailing from Georgia via Brooklyn, the vocalist gives contemporary R&B the double shot in the arm of full-body rhythm and no-foolin' power-blues it's been craving for decades. Jones' classic sound has roots in the styles of Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and James Brown. Her melodies come straight out of the Saturday night juke joint and Sunday morning Mass, while the Dap-Kings, her backup band, punctuate every syllable with hip-bumping backbeats and soul-shaking horns.
