Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt to Tour Together

Among the certifiable legendary musicians residing in the Bay Area are bluesman-folkster Taj Mahal and singer/slide guitarist Bonnie Raitt. The two (both of whom need multiple shelves in their living rooms to hold all their Grammys) have a long association, going back to 1973, when Mahal co-produced Raitt's third album, Takin' My Time. Now they've announced a major co-headlining tour, “BonTaj Roulet,” which will feature solo sets by each artist, along with duets and a nightly jam session (to keep things fresh). The tour (which benefits benefit organizations that work on the following issues: Safe and Sustainable Energy; Environmental Protection; Social Justice and Human Rights; and Blues/Music Education) begins in August and runs through September; pencil in September 16th for an Oakland stop (venue to be determined); info is here.

For my money, you'd be hard-pressed to find two other artists better suited for such an excursion, not to mention two artists more representative of the blues-folk genre. As Raitt said, “It's like we're cousins… We're both blessed that we knew those old blues guys, we love the same kinds of music-we have a common language.”
