A rogue Oakland fire department “agent” went on a bogus shutdown of Leo's Music Club in Oakland on Friday night, according to this detailed report from CBS Bay Area's Alyssa Pereira. The venue has cancelled tonight's performance from SF-cum-L.A. garage rock classic, Thee Oh Sees, citing “the safety of our patrons, employees and artists,” in a FaceBook post. We'll dive into some of these details below, but all bummed out parties should direct themselves to tomorrow night's Thee Oh Sees show at Great American Music Hall, as there is no word on whether or not a replacement show is scheduled for tonight at a different venue yet.
OFD's Vincent Crudele, who's been a described as part of the “Vegetation Management Bureau” (not a joke….feels like this is straight out Rob Guillory's Chew comic book!) reportedly strolled in with a task force on Friday night before 9 p.m. and shook down the entire staff, claiming proprietor Jason Perkins is “a criminal.” The club was shut down before the night could even get going. The CBS report goes into more detail about the incident and how this isn't the first time this “agent” has harassed the year-old venue, who's now filing for a restraining order.
The shittiest part about this is that not only was Friday night's show shut down, but Oakland's Bells Atlas had a show on Saturday which also got shut down (the group played Starline Social Club instead and judging by their Twitter, they did just fine) and now Thee Oh Sees, who've scheduled a super ambitious Bay Area calendar to promote their newest album, Mutilator Defeated at Last, cancelled what would've been a special and intimate show at Leo's.
In the end, all fan roads of redemption lead to Great American Music Hall on Wednesday night. Say what you will about Thee Oh Sees moving to L.A., but the group have still kept SF and the Bay Area close to their hearts, as they continue to play here consistently. Pick up your tickets for Wednesday's show here and get your neck stretches in before the show, cause it's always a head-banging affair.
