This Week: Janelle Monae's Weapon, Ed Sheeran's Pasta, and the Androgyny of Miley Cyrus

Based on social media chatter and more formal interviews with the press, the theme of this week is undoubtedly bullying, and the best possible ways to deal with haters. Miley is defiant, Kendrick Lamar lives by example, Sam Smith publicly calls out homophobes, and Ed Sheeran's got pasta to eat, which is infinitely more important. Also, one Canadian NOFX fan refused to bow down to Fat Mike's on-stage bullying tactics a few days ago, and got $20 for his troubles.

Here are the quotes of the week:

“Lately, I've been talking a lot about my being gender-fluid and gender-neutral. And some people snarl at that. They want to judge me. People need more conventional role models, I guess. But I just don't care to be that person.”
We don't want you to be that person either, Miley Cyrus. (Marie Claire

“You know what? You have no business being here. I will pay you $100 to leave this show. Are you gonna stand in front of me and bother me with your fuckin' tie-dye shirt and your beard?”
Fat Mike asked an audience member, deemed too “hipster” by bandmate El Hefe, to leave a NOFX show in Nova Scotia. The fan gave up his T-shirt to Mike, for $20 instead. (YouTube)

[jump] “This genuinely doesn't offend me, coz I'm way too tick skinned when it comes to this kind of shit. BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!”
Sam Smith, callIng out an Instagram account that stated “WE HATE FAGGOT SMITH” (Instagram)

“Me stuttering as a kid plays into my cadence on a track, how I’m able to say certain things — it’s why it’s catchy. Though it’s funny how things work out. Stuff you get picked on for actually helps you and shit.”
Kendrick Lamar, continuing to prove he's the King of taking negatives and turning them into positives. (Shortlist)

“whenever reviewers criticize my show for having “minimal production” I literally want to smash their face into a wall… like honestly r u watching a different show or can you not see the 16 neon outlined amplifiers, the giant inflatable heart & the staircase?”
Look, guys, Charli XCX put some neon on her amps. Can we drop this now please? (Twitter)

Ed Sheeran showed off a new tattoo in progress:
and when people criticized the piece, he, rather brilliantly, responded with this Tweet:

“This song is a vessel. It carries the unbearable anguish of millions. We recorded it to channel the pain, fear, and trauma caused by the ongoing slaughter of our brothers and sisters. We recorded it to challenge the indifference, disregard, and negligence of all who remain quiet about this issue. Silence is our enemy. Sound is our weapon.”
Janelle Monae has recorded “Hell You Talmbout”, with a host of friends, to protest the multitude of African Americans killed by police officers. (Instagram)

“I’ll always have love for Joel because he put me on at an early time. But he’s an asshole, and everyone knows that, and he knows that. And that’s kinda his thing.”
Skrillex went on the radio and called his old friend Deadmau5 an asshole. (92.3 Amp Radio)

“thanks for that pocket full of certified psychoanalysis.”
Deadmau5 cares not for Skrillex's personality assessment. (Twitter)

“Apparently I am still indestructible.”
Rejoice to the heavens, for Lemmy shall not be beaten by the passage of time! (The Guardian)
