This Week: Lorde and Drake Get Married, Taylor Swift Gets Corny, and Elton John Gets Pranked

Sometimes, dumbassery and prejudice ends up igniting a valuable conversation about what changes are necessary to make us better humans. That happened twice this week thanks to the absurd arrest of a 14-year-old boy who made the mistake of being smart enough to make a clock, as well as the Russian pranksters who targeted Elton John because of his belief in LGBT rights. Heartwarmingly, social media quickly stepped up to support them both.

Here are your quotes of the week:

There were a lot of great responses to the (super racist) arrest of Ahmed Mohamed, for taking a home-made clock into school, but Questlove's was undoubtedly the funniest:

“#IStandWithAhmed – stay strong little brother.  you are a genius and we all support your incredible passion for innovation + technology.”
Russell Simmons had some kind words for Ahmed as well. (Twitter)

[jump] “Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today. I look forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia.”
Elton John attempted to stand up for Russia's much-maligned LGBT communities… (Instagram)

“Pranks are funny. Homophobia, however, is never funny… If this unfortunate incident has helped push this vital issue back into the spotlight, then I am happy to be pranked on this occasion.”
...Unfortunately, John wasn't actually talking to Putin, he was getting punked by Russian late night TV presenters. (Instagram)

“I think that there are also a lot of things that young people know that older people don’t, and older people will never understand again because they’re in a different section of their lives. I think when you’re young you’re a lot more open-minded, and sometimes you’re a lot more perceptive about what’s going on in the world.”
Disney star Zendaya has been doing a lot of awesome work to assist children living in poverty. (HungerTV)

Some very talented people in Maryland just turned Taylor Swift’s face into a corn maze:
“I’m single, ladies… And ready to mingle.”
Justin Bieber is officially available, folks. (Ellen)

“The show will not just be Whitney comes on, sings and gets off. The narrative will document parts of her life, her achievements and celebrate Whitney.”
CEO of Hologram USA, David Alki, on the Whitney Houston hologram that will emerge in “about a year.” (Billboard

“I don’t think our brands are the same, I don’t think they match, I don’t think our audiences are the same. In my mind she’s a role model, I’m completely not.”
Rihanna doesn't think she's anything like Taylor Swift. She is correct. (NME

Dear Drake, this Instagram post of you and Lorde was pretty weird:
