Oakland’s Waterstrider just released its debut LP, Nowhere Now. The album sees front man Nate Salman and company flexing a smooth, yet powerful sound that never ceases to evoke the feel of the finest corners of California; from the Oakland Hills to the Santa Barbara shore.
The album’s opening track and lead single “White Light,” sees groovy guitar riffs from Salman and Drew Brown, along with complex percussion arrangements from Brijean Murphy and drummer Walker Johnson. Bassist Scott Brown rounds out a tight quintet that’s building some seriously intriguing soundscapes.
But the most encapsulating part of this band lies with Salman. His falsetto approaches impossible territory on songs like “Redwood” and all the way through to Nowhere Now’s penultimate title track (embedded below). Salman is a rare talent, and he’s corralled a solid cast around him to form one of the Bay’s brightest up-and-coming bands.
Waterstrider's record release party is April 30 at Rickshaw Stop.
