Devendra Banhart @ the Regency Ballroom
Venezuelan-raised folkie Devendra Banhart already had a few critically acclaimed albums under his loincloth before the age of 25, cued to the proudly juvenile “I Feel Just Like a Child.” But as the oddball novelty of “freak-folk” wears off and Joanna Newsom's album titles become phrases someone from the year 2010 might actually use aloud, the creaky romantic, now pushing 30, has decided to develop his songwriting. On last year's What We Will Be (his first for a major label and seventh total), he fleshed out his neosoul and bossa nova fantasies with tastefully rich arrangements, particularly “Baby,” a dead ringer for Michael Jackson's “Girlfriend.” Most shockingly, his voice may have outgrown its artsy warble in favor of something actually sexy and (gulp) mature.
Devendra Banhart performs tonight at the Regency Ballroom (the show has been moved from the Warfield), 8 p.m., $27.50-$32.50.
