A BART rider who allegedly made bomb threats on social media through his cellphone was put on psychiatric hold, BART police said Tuesday.
Alameda County sheriff officials learned of a man, who was not identified, making bomb threats on social media around 8:50 p.m. Monday, Bay City News reports. Who or what was directly threatened was not immediately disclosed, but he did not make direct threats against BART.
Once alerted, officials tracked his cellphone near the Embarcadero BART station but were not able to locate him. He was later determined to be at the Daly City station, where they were able to track and detain him.
BART officials were then alerted that an unattended backpack was left on the same San Francisco International Airport-bound train as the suspect, causing an evacuation around 9:50 p.m. The station reopened after the train was deemed safe.
The man was placed on psychiatric hold in addition to a criminal hold for allegedly making terrorist threats and false bomb threats, police say.
