Cyclist Latest Victim in Spate of Vehicular Hit and Runs

Of the city's five hit and run incidents this month, two people have died.

A driver in the Mission struck a cyclist on Tuesday in the city’s fifth reported hit and run this month, according to police.

The cyclist was struck around 5:45 a.m. while on Valencia Street, between 21st and 22nd streets. The driver has not been identified.

Hours later, SFMTA Director Ed Reiskin revealed to the Board of Directors that a pedestrian in a hit and run in the Richmond earlier this month died from his injuries last week, the Examiner reports. Around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 4, a still-unknown driver fatally struck 54-year-old Ronald Albanesius as he crossed Geary Boulevard at Second Avenue.

Albanesius’s death marked the second fatal hit-and-run this month. A driver near Turk and Taylor streets fatally struck 65-year-old cyclist Gregory Blackman on Aug. 14.

Michael Smith, 41, plead not guilty to charges of murder, hit and run causing serious and permanent injury or death, and driving under the influence. He allegedly had been drinking in Oakland with his wife, who warned him not to drive, before driving to San Francisco while drinking from a bag of wine.

Another hit and run occurred in the Tenderloin just four days later, when an orange or metallic red car struck a pedestrian just before 3:15 a.m.

SFPD officers, too, were the victim of a hit and run on Aug. 14, also in the Tenderloin. Two officers in their patrol vehicle near Franklin and Ellis streets were hit by another vehicle around 4:12 p.m., who drove away.

UPDATE, 8/27: Two more hit and runs occurred in one weekend, including a fatal one.

A driver fled the scene after hitting a motorcyclist on Arkansas and 23rd streets in Potrero Hill on Saturday around 3:45 p.m. The 33-year-old motorcyclist was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died.

On Sunday around 1:25 a.m., a driver lost control on South Van Ness and 20th streets and hit three cars before fleeing on foot. A 24-year-old man in one of the impacted cars was sent to the hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.

The two suspect in each respective hit and run were located and taken into custody.
