Drag Queens on Ice Returns to Union Square

Casting aside, for a moment, the time-held tradition of the strip club toy drive, nothing rings in the holidays in San Francisco like a drag queen on ice skates.

Or rather, a drag queen on ice skates with a bevy of corporate sponsors.

Ergo, the fifth annual Drag Queens on Ice: Glitz and Glamour, will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m. in Union Square.  The show features San Francisco society dames Mutha Chuka, Holotta Tymes, Kylie-Pop, Kim Chi Chi, BeBe Sweetbriar, and Mahlae Balenciaga. Donna Sachet hosts, alongside special guests Queen Dilly Dally and Sister Roma of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence (and Facebook-flogging fame).

To that end, the show illustrates drag's gradual shift from left-field subculture to corporate schtick. With small clubs shuttering, many of San Francisco's queens are seizing opportunities to dance at tables at tech companies, or host Academy Awards nights at The Battery. Drag performance, like so many other local wonders, is getting gentrified.

But maybe that's not such a bad thing. It's helped sustain the careers of several Queens on Ice cast members, while granting them local notoriety. Not to mention it's rendered drag one of the few performing arts that can generate a decent living — if the performer has rent control.

And for this show in particular, it's generated some adorable Santa-themed costumes.
