Human Fetus Found Washed Ashore in Berkeley

A bizarre and grisly case in Berkeley, as a pedestrian discovers a “fairly well-developed fetus" near the shores of the Berkeley Reef.

Berkeley police are investigation one of their strangest and most disturbing cases in some time, as a male human fetus with the umbilical cord still attached was found along the West Berkeley shoreline near the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex, also known as Gilman Fields.

Bay City News reports that a pedestrian made the frightening discovery on Tuesday afternoon while walking a waterfront pathway. Berkeley police were immediately notified at about 2:39 p.m., and have been in touch with other regional law enforcement agencies.

“It’s likely that it washed up to shore” Berkeley police Lt. Kevin Schofield told NBC Bay Area, noting that the origin of the fetus is still unknown.

Berkeleyside notes in an update that the Alameda County Coroner’s Office is now performing DNA tests, which are expected to take some time, and that a medical examination is also underway.

The area of the discovery is not far from Golden Gate Fields, right off West Frontage Road and between Gilman Street and University Avenue.
