Authorities announced that 67-year-old James Mayfield, a church deacon, was convicted of first degree murder, giving closure to the 37-year-old unsolved slaying of Jenny Read, a local artist.
Mayfield was arrested in 2009 at the Shiloh Full Gospel Church on Third Street in the Bayview, where he lived and worked. A DNA hit linked him to the 1976 murder of Read. He now faces life in prison.
“This defendant took a life in cold-blood,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “Thanks to technological advances and DNA evidence, James Mayfield will spend the rest of his life in prison for the atrocious acts he committed nearly 40 years ago.”
