If you’re heading Downtown from elsewhere in San Francisco this morning, prepare yourself for a long commute. A truck driver struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Market and Fifth streets shortly before 6 a.m. this morning, sending the individual to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
SFPD reports that it was a hit-and-run. The Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the victim, Michael Evans, died.
Police have located the driver and are continuing the investigation at Fifth and Market, where the sight of a damaged walker and black and grey clothes still on the road.
Supervisor Matt Haney, who represents the area, called it “another devastating and horrific loss of life this morning in the [Tenderloin].
“We have some of the most dangerous streets and intersections in the city, and we need urgent changes,” Haney tweeted. “My thoughts are with this individual’s family and friends.”
Consequently, the intersection has been closed throughout the morning commute, with long queues of inbound buses dropping passengers off between Fifth and Sixth streets. (Closures extend to side streets like Fifth, Eddy, and Cyril Magnin.) This has also forced the F-Market to run in separate segments, from Castro Station to Van Ness Avenue, and from Fisherman’s Wharf to Ferry Plaza.
Further, the Muni underground is having issues of its own. Drainage issues discovered at Embarcadero Station during routine maintenance checks last evening have caused the J, L, and M lines to terminate at Montgomery Station, while the K/T and N trains are bypassing Embarcadero and continuing on to Caltrain and beyond.
Thursday marks the third pedestrian killed in less than a month.
Alexander Norton was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a driver hit him on First and Howard on June 27. Norton, 30, died the next day.
In addition, three pedestrians were struck at San Francisco International Airport on July 1. Two survived life-threatening injuries but 33-year-old Jedidiah Crews did not.
Thursday also marks the 21st Vision Zero death in 2019, outpacing the previous year.
UPDATE, 11:55 a.m.: Transit safety advocates Walk SF released a statement, calling Evans’ death “senseless and preventable traffic violence.” They also called to address the role delivery trucks in dangerous collisions.
“We are absolutely devastated to learn about this tragedy and our hearts go out to the victim’s family and friends,” said Walk SF Executive Director Jodie Medeiros. “We have a crisis on our streets with traffic safety, and the huge influx of not just cars, but also service and delivery trucks, put all of us as pedestrians at greater risk every day.
“The size of trucks, the fact that they can drag a victim, poor visibility, and that the higher front end makes crashes more severe… all of this is a deadly combination.”
