Plan Your Free Black Friday Hike in a Redwood Forest

Thanks to a gift from the Save the Redwoods League, there's never been a better reason to skip the nightmare of Black Friday sales and get outside on the day after Thanksgiving.

The non-profit has announced that it is offering free admission to 49 state parks on Friday, November 27. Don't forget to print out a pass before you go, and enjoy working off your Thanksgiving feast in the company of thousand-year-old trees.

Here are some of the best nearby parks to choose from:

[jump] Big Basin Redwoods State Park
If you really want the redwoods experience, head 90 minutes south to Big Basin. California's oldest state park has tons of trails through old-growth forest.

Bothe-Napa Valley Park
About an hour and a half north of San Francisco, you can have your nature and stop by a winery too. Plus, they have yurts!

Jack London State Historical Park
Just 50 miles north of SF, this park has a mix of historical sites and back-country trails: a good combination for families with kids or elders who might not be up for a long hike.

Mount Tamalpais State Park
The view from Mount Tam will give you another chance to be thankful (as will the 20-mile, hour-long drive from SF through steep and twisty roads).

Samuel P. Taylor State Park
Just an hour north of SF, do some serious hiking through redwood groves.

There are 45 other parks to choose from, so get planning. The only way you can really go wrong is if you end up at Walmart.
