As though you needed another reason to distrust Ron Conway — Airbnb investor, Ed Lee financier, backer of a campaign to smear David Campos, and all-around political Svengali — get this: he's now emerged as an apologist for CIA torture.
On the day the Senate Intelligence Committee released its long-awaited report on CIA interrogation tactics, revealing that the agency mislead Congress and the public about its use of torture, Conway decided to weigh in with a #SupportTheCIA hashtag.
[jump] Granted, Conway has never tried hard to hide his political views. In San Francisco he's earned a reputation for manipulating elections by pouring vast sums of money into the candidates, and campaigns, that best serve his interests.
That said, Conway's tweets to Senator Dianne Feinstein this morning suggest he sees himself as more than just a local fixer. Urging the Senator to rethink her criticism of CIA torture and subterfuge, Conway contends that these interrogation methods — which included rectal feeding and threats to detainees' children — actually “saved American lives” in the wake of 9/11.
He bolsters that claim by citing an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, written by several ex-CIA directors.
We are waiting to hear back from the mayor's office as to whether it now plans to distance itself from the tech billionaire.
