Ross Mirkarimi to Appear in Court This Week

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi was supposed to appear in court today, but his attorney is now telling reporters he will be arraigned Thursday on domestic violence charges. Mirkarimi was booked into his own county jail on Friday on three misdemeanor counts of battery, child endangerment, and attempting to dissuade a witness.

Despite these politically damning charges, it was business as usual for the newly elected sheriff, who showed his face at the San Francisco Labor Council breakfast on Monday. He told reporters that nothing would stop him from attending the annual MLK event, which, incidentally, was held just a few blocks from his Webster Street home where he is barred from seeing his family.

The Monday event was as close as he would get to his house where his wife, Eliana Lopez, and their 2-year-old son,Theo, are living. A judge signed a temporary restraining order, prohibiting the sheriff from having any contact with his family at this time.
