SF Gets Tough On Smoking In Parks: It's The Quality Of Life Crimes, Not The Quantity

So it finally happened: the city issued its first $100 fine for smoking in a park, more than two years after the law was introduced. The lucky winner was some dude at Portsmouth Square in Chinatown, a park that had previously “angered” Mayor Newsom with its condition. Gotta love the righteous indignation of our citizens:

“I’m smelling [cigarette smoke] now,” said Terri Bookbinder, an Orinda resident, whose 7-year-old son was using the park’s playground. “There’s smoking going on. Nobody seems to be concerned about being stopped.”
