Shitty Protest Planned For Crissy Field

Fight bullshit with dogshit.

Snarky, witty, punny signs and slogans have emerged from the hundreds of protests that have taken place across the United States since Trump was elected president — but there’s more than one way to express one’s displeasure about our current political climate and the subsequent hate groups that have emerged. Just two days after news broke that an “alt-right” rally may descend on Crissy Field, artist Tuffy Tuffington created an event titled “Leave your dog poop on Crissy Field.” The date? Aug. 25, one day before Patriot Prayer gathers in the lush, grassy park.

“Leave a gift for our Alt-Right friends,” reads the Facebook event. “Take your dog to Crissy Field and let them do their business and be sure not to clean it up!”

As of 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, more than 40 people said they were attending, with nearly 200 interested. If participants and their hounds follow through, the joke will be not just on the Patriot Prayer group, but the National Park Service, which manages the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

“We need full assurances that your organization is taking every possible measure to prepare for this rally,” Mayor Ed Lee said in a scathing letter penned to the local Park Service on Monday. We can only assume that also means cleaning up piles of dog doo-doo before protesters arrive.

Granting Patriot Prayer its rally permit is starting to look like a really shitty decision.

Update: Tuffington sent SF Weekly a little more info about why he decided to create the event. “It’s been a frustrating six months under this new administration and the events of the last week seem to be leading to more inevitable violence,” he says. “I was walking my dogs and was thinking about what a great act of civil disobedience it would be to come in the day before and cover the location of the alt-right rally with tiny land mines of poop. Obviously, it’s a symbolic gesture and I don’t really expect thousands of dog owners to descend on the field and let their dogs do their thing but if a little bit of humor can raise awareness and fight the evil in this world than my job is done!”
