Erstwhile San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was a master of government by press release, the Picasso of symbolic leadership. He's now lieutenant governor, a job with a relationship to weightiness and responsibility akin to Picasso's relationship with photorealism.
So it came as little surprise when Newsom fired off an indignant letter to University of California president Mark Yudof, piggybacking on the issue du jour: the awfulness of the University of California's new logo.
The embattled university system has explained away its miserable new logo as a symbol of today's UC. But when Newsom of all people tells you your symbolism sucks, you should listen. It'd be like Phil Spector telling you your wig is odd-looking.
