In a North Beach kidnapping case that could have ended much worse, a woman escaped after being coerced into a car with a gun on Wednesday afternoon, police said Thursday.

A 21-year-old woman was walking home on Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. when a man suddenly got out of a parked sedan and threatened to kill her if she didn’t get inside, according to police. The woman backed away but the man again threatened to kill her, this time pulling out a gun at Bay and Kearny streets — a couple blocks from Pier 39.

The woman got inside the vehicle. But the man, thought to be in his 30s, stopped it to deal with his buzzing phone.

The woman saw her chance, got out of the car, and ran home.

No arrest was reported Wednesday morning.
