‘The The’ at The Masonic, Thursday, September 27th, 2018

Matt Johnson, the creative force and constant band member behind the post-punk and rock act ‘The The’, broke his 17-year touring hiatus this year, with a string of six North American dates ending at San Francisco’s The Masonic.

Backed by a full band, Johnson took the audience through a massive set of almost two-dozen songs covering the span of The The’s discography, even throwing in a cover of Hank Williams’s ‘I Saw the Light’. While the set had an emphasis on the album ‘Dusk’, with selections like ‘This is the Night’ and ‘Love is Stronger than Death’, the set also included hits from other albums, including ‘This is the Day’, along with ‘Uncertain Smile’ as part of their encore.

Talkative between songs, and gracious to his fans, Johnson performed with focus and intensity, making it seems as though he’d never left the stage.
