Improve your communication skills in the new year

Keep those resolutions with classes in public speaking and diplomacy.

With New Year’s resolutions on our minds, we can also use some boosts to supercharge our future success.  But what skills are most useful to develop?  In the age of the Internet, communication skills have never been more important. According to The Balance, there are several types of communication skills that are critical to success, including written communication, nonverbal communication (body language), friendliness and respect, and picking the right medium for communication (email, phone, text, etc.).

Start with a public speaking mini class offered by Magnetic Speaking in San Francisco.  Students learn to become a better presenter, influencer, and leader with their weekly one-hour class.  The class is a workshop style experience where students tackle challenges like thinking faster on their feet, never being thrown off by interruptions, loosening up and becoming more natural, expanding their comfort zone, and stretching their communications limits.  This class can be taken over and over – students learn something new in every class and are able to practice their skills in front of other students in a safe and supportive environment.

The American Management Association is offering another important communication course for professionals: How to Communicate with Diplomacy, Tact and Credibility. How well someone communicates can make or break their professional image. It directly influences how others view a co-worker’s effort and performance—as well as their prospects for career advancement and mobility. Unfortunately, being diplomatic, tactful and credible doesn’t always come naturally to people. Even when it does, such communication can easily be derailed by emotions and conflicts. To be a communicator who is skilled in all three areas, it takes awareness, training and the know-how to apply proven techniques to all kinds of situations.  This seminar teaches students how to choose and use the most appropriate words and emotional tone for every business interaction. All attendees will gain insights into their communication style and the styles of others, while building skills to clearly and effectively receive and transmit information, ideas, thoughts, feelings and needs.
