Friday Six: Eat Gorda, Eat!

Plus we’re getting a Steak ‘N Shake, Gatorade goes organic, and what it’s like to eat with noted foodie rock star Sammy Hagar.

Puerto Rican Pop-Up EatGordaEat Comes to Doctor’s Lounge

Starting with a soft opening on Oct. 9 and running every Sunday in October from 5-9 p.m., Excelsior bar Doctor’s Lounge will be home to a Puerto Rican pop-up called EatGordaEat that will feature chef Illyanna Maisonet’s grandmother’s home cooking, like bacalaitos (codfish fritters), carne guisada con calabasa (braised pork in tomato sauce with Spanish olives and pumpkin). Tickets are $45 per person.

Daly City Gets a Steak ‘N Shake

More chains invade! The Business Times reports that Campbell, Calif., will get a Steak ‘N Shake, too.

Closures and Assorted Endings

Volta will stop regular lunch service after today, the Ghirardelli Square beer garden has wound down, and Bon Marché was taken off life support. Oh, and McDonald’s is phasing out the small-franchisee system so it can stay on top of its game with respect to introducing new technology.

Afghani Women Take Charge

Here’s some good news for a change. Women in rural Afghanistan have been leading a quiet revolution through farm unions, increasing the number of crops grown and helping the country become self-sufficient. This has social consequences for the conservative country, as The New York Times reports: “They are no longer greeted as the mother of Ahmad or the wife of Mahmoud, but rather ‘union leader Gul Bahar’ or ‘deputy union leader Reza Gul.’ ”

Gatorade Goes Organic

It still has electrolytes! Three years after phasing out brominated vegetable oil, Gatorade introduces G Organic, which the New York Times reports will come in lemon, strawberry and mixed berry flavors. But did the NYT sneak in some shade? Calling Gatorade “the brightly colored sports drink marketed by professional sports figures in advertising targeted at amateur athletes” sounds like shade to me.

What It’s Like to Eat With Sammy Hagar

Tamara Palmer dines with rock stars, and writes about it for Bravo. Turns out Sammy Hagar grows his own pineapples, and eats BLTs several times a day.
